Overview

The DERS program provides additional mentoring and support to students with strong potential in economics research.  Additional advising and out-of-class enrichment activities -- dinner discussions, workshops, and peer exchanges -- accelerate and enhance the coursework of participants who can also work with faculty on paid research assistantships.

For paid research assistantships, students are expected to apply for funding. (Potential funding sources includes UGAR programs such as the James O. Freedman Presidential Scholars program and Undergraduate Research Assistantships at Dartmouth or URAD.) These assistantships often evolve into research collaborations with faculty and independent student projects, including senior theses.

For students interested in graduate studies in economics and related fields, the program aims to help prepare students to apply to and succeed in those programs.

Please direct any questions about the program to DERS director, Professor Melinda Petre, at melinda.petre@dartmouth.edu.

Application

Applications are open for the next cohort of DERS students. Economics students in the 2027 and 2028 classes are invited to apply through this link. The form will be due by 5 p.m. on January 16.

The form asks for a faculty endorsement. Please consult with the faculty member and get their assent prior to filling out the form. The form just asks for their name; we will follow up with them to obtain their more detailed recommendation offline.

The form also asks students to indicate at least three professors that they would like to work with. Please spend time looking on the department website to figure out which faculty members may be a good fit for your research interests.

Decisions will be announced in early March.

Please direct any questions about the program or this application to DERS director, Professor Melinda Petre, at melinda.petre@dartmouth.edu.

Information Session

Join us on Friday, November 7, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Rocky 001 for a presentation explaining more about DERS and answering questions about applying. We will then break for an open house where potential applicants can meet faculty and current student members of DERS while enjoying some Han Fusion!
