Exciting Student Leadership Opportunity: Teaching Fellows Coordinator Position in the Department of Economics

Are you ready to lead and inspire? We're seeking a dynamic and dedicated Teaching Fellow Coordinator who will not only shape the experience of fellow students who help with teaching but also enhance the educational journey for both instructors and students in the Economics Department. Key Qualifications and Benefits:

  • Experience Required: Minimum three terms as a teaching fellow, ideally including core courses. Exceptional recommendations from course instructors are a must.
  • Skills: Outstanding communication and organizational skills. Ability to work autonomously and manage time effectively, adhering to self-set deadlines.
  • Compensation: $17 per hour for an average of 5 hours per week, plus professional development through regular interactions with faculty advisors and senior staff.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leadership Transition: Engage in strategy sessions with the outgoing TF Coordinator and your faculty advisor to ensure a seamless transition and immediate impact in your new role.
  • Community Engagement: Initiate and lead introduction sessions with teaching fellows to reinforce the roles and responsibilities of the position, boosting the visibility and impact of the TF Coordinator.
  • Documentation and Communication: Oversee the updating of job descriptions and the distribution of best practices among teaching fellows. Your correspondence with new faculty will set the tone for the academic year, making your role pivotal from day one.

Ongoing Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Representation: Act as the face of the Economics Department at student events, championing the department and its initiatives.
  • Community Building: Organize and host appreciation events for teaching fellows, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Partner with student associations and groups to promote diversity within the department, playing a key role in shaping an inclusive academic environment.
  • Faculty Collaboration: Regular meetings with the faculty advisor and targeted discussions with course instructors to enhance TF integration and recruitment.
  • Feedback and Enhancements: Collect and analyze feedback through various channels to prepare insightful reports that highlight successes and identify opportunities for improvement in the TF program.

Economics Teaching Fellows

Teaching Fellows sharpen their economics expertise while honing leadership and communication skills, building strong faculty connections, boosting confidence, and preparing for impactful academic or professional careers.  

Qualifications: 

  • Experience Required:  command of relevant course concepts and applications, with willingness to refresh as needed  
  • Skills: strong communication and organization skills, approachability, open-mindedness, empathy
  • Compensation: $16.25 per hour for an average of 5 (max 10) hours per week; paid time included meeting as well as prep/review time and may include course attendance (per instructor needs)

 

Responsibilities before term starts may include: 

 

  • Exact responsibilities vary by class.  TFs meet with course instructor to understand instructor expectations for the term
  • Provide instructor feedback on course design: canvas, course content, assessment components, student engagement, if requested
  • Refresh relevant course content as needed  

 

Responsibilities during the term may include: 

 

  • Host regular office hours to assist students with lecture content, problem sets, and exam preparation 
  • Regular communication with students via email and/or slack (effectively acting as a de-facto liaison between students and instructor)  
  • Triage queries related to course logistics and Canvas site  
  • Respond to repeat email queries to save instructor's time 
  • Reach out to students who are struggling, give them advice for how they can do better and encourage them to reach out to instructors 
  • Assist with the monitoring/grading/moderating of group and canvas discussions (as needed by instructor); instructor may ask you to grade low stakes assignments (e.g., problem sets and discussion boards graded for completeness)
